What to expect at Woodbrook

when you arrive at 25 Stevenson Lane ...

Sunday Mornings at Woodbrook

Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m., we begin to trickle in!

During the school year we offer a well stocked Welcome Center--

with coffee, teas, iced water, and various goodies!

Sunday Schools begins around 9:20 a.m. (ish!)

We have classes for both children and adults.

Child care is provided for our youngest friends.

Morning Worship begins in the sanctuary at 10:30 a.m.

Some people dress more formally (a dress or jacket and tie), but most come dressed more informally.

Come as you are. All are welcome.

We balance the formal and informal in our worship

or the vertical and horizontal (if you wish)--the presence of God and the importance of life.

We have some who love the organ and classical music.

We have some who prefer the band.

We are learning how to celebrate what someone else loves even when it would not be our preference.

Over the course of an hour, our services include a passing of the peace, congregational singing,

prayer, Scripture reading, a message to young worshippers, and a sermon.

Expect to think. Expect to have conventional thinking questioned (not necessarily rejected—though sometimes rejected!).

Expect politics. We believe that God's word about life together in the world is inherently political, though not partisan.

Expect people to stay after worship visiting with each other!

Communion is offered on the first Sunday of every month.

You do not need to be a member of our church (or any church!) to receive communion at God's table.

We come forward to receive bread (often homemade) and juice from the ministers at the front.

If you prefer to stay in your seat, communion can be brought to you—if you wish.

Families at Woodbrook

Children are always welcome!

Babies and their strollers are welcome in the sanctuary,

and we say as strongly as we can: Do not worry if your young child participates vocally in the service!

There is also a section of the narthex (right outside the sanctuary) designated for our youngest friends.

Our restrooms are equipped with baby changing stations.

Children leave after the message to young worshippers on second and fourth Sundays for activities designed for them.

At all services, children are welcome to stay with their families during worship and enjoy playing with “activity bags"

(in bags at the entrance to the sanctuary).

Our Sunday School teachers are active, involved church members who have agreed to a background check,

allowing our Sanctuary and classrooms where we gather to worship and serve God to be places of trust.

Accessibility

Hearing assistance devices are available upon request from an usher.

Accessible entrances and parking spaces nearest to the ramps are located in the parking lot in back of the sanctuary.

Accessible pew seating is available in the Sanctuary for wheelchairs, walkers, or baby strollers.

All restrooms on the main floor of the church have accessible stalls.

Baptist

We are proudly baptist!  We intentionally keep the name even in a culture in which it does us few favors,

but we lean into freedom of religion, separation of church and state.

Our historical roots are in the Southern Baptist heritage (though we have rejected their priorities).

Our ties are now to the Alliance of Baptists with their long-time emphasis on missions as serving communities around the world with those who live in those communities, their affirmation and celebration of women, and the lgbtqia+ community as equals in service to good and hope, their commitment to the work of anti-racism, and their affirmation and celebration of historical baptist values (like the separation of church and state, the autonomy of the local church).

As a friend once noted of another baptist church: if someone’s looking for baptist, they’re probably not looking for us,

and if they’re looking for us, they’re probably not looking for baptist!

Wednesday Nights (during the school year)

If you come on a Wednesday night, we begin gathering around 6:00 p.m. for our weekly family dinner together.

It costs you $8 (family maximum of $20), and menus range from pizza and salad and dessert

to enchilada casseroles, burgoo, Cincinnati chili. We have served Indian food, pancakes and hot dogs.

The emphasis is fellowship. If there is programming, it's minimal. We just enjoy being and eating together!

Wednesday Nights (during the summer)

We do not maintain our regular Wednesday night schedule through the summer,

but we do have one cookout per month on the third Wednesday of June, July, and August.

Same pricing as during the year, but hamburgers (including veggie burgers), hotdogs, fixings, sides, and dessert.
